A hammer comprises a head 10 having a plunger 13 loaded by a spring 14 and formed with a bore 16 for a striker pin 12 so that a nail may be retained in the bore and when the plunger is moved inwardly during operation, the nail contacts the striker pin thereby driving the nail into a workpiece. A spring-loaded ball 17 and/or a magnet 18 may be used for retaining the nail in the plunger which is prevented from rotating by a pin-and-slot device 13a, 15.
