Abstract

A water-dilutable thermosetting liquid resin system comprises (1) a phenol-formaldehyde condensate, (2) a urea- and/or dicyandiamideformaldehyde condensate and (3) a trialkoxy-silane, e.g. an amine trialkoxy silane, a water-soluble organic acid salt thereof or a glycidyl trialkoxy silane. Ingredients (1) and (2) may be prepared separately, simultaneously or successively. The system thermosets to a heat-, combustion- and moisture-resistant resin and may be used to bond fibrous materials, e.g. glass or rock wool for thermal insulators and these or cellulosic products for battery separators, electrical insulation and filters, and also in laminates, coatings, impregnants and adhesives. Examples illustrate variations in ingredients (1), (2) and (3) and their proportions and the use of the products in bonding glass fibres.
