Abstract
1278777 Aqueous composition of alkyd resin and silane compound FIBREGLASS Ltd J D CRABTREE and W B PRICE 11 July 1969 [16 July 1968] 33893/68 Heading C3R [Also in Division Dl] An aqueous composition for size coating glass fibres contains, as the only components which react to form the size coating, a water soluble alkyd resin capable of undergoing cross-linking on the application of heat, a silane compound capable of reacting with both the resin and the glass fibre surface and, optionally, a watersoluble cross-linking agent, all said components being dissolved in water. The composition may contain other components which facilitate the formation of the size coating but which are not reactants in the chemical reaction producing the coating, e.g. glass lubricants or antistatic agents. Suitably the alkyd resin is saturated or is an unsaturated resin which cross-links via hydroxyl groups. Specified resins are those marketed under the Registered Trade Mark "Epok". A malamine-formaldehyde resin is the specified cross-linking agent. Specified silanes are gammaaminopropyl trimethoxy silane, N-beta-(aminoethyl)-gamma-amino-propyl trimethoxy silane and gamma-glycidoxy-propyl trimethoxy silane.
