Abstract

1,063,546. Selective signalling. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. July 29, 1965 Aug. 11, 1964, No. 32479/65. Heading G4H. A line-printer of the type in which a continuously rotating type-cylinder, Fig. 2, successively presents a complete line of each available character to a printing position and in which type-hammers are selectively energized at appropriate times whereby after one revolution of the drum a complete line is pointed, is characterized in that each numeral has associated with it on the coding tracks 51-57 of the drum three different combinations of bits whereby each numeral can be printed in either the subscript, the normal or the superscript position. Two embodiments in block diagram form are described. In the first the entire line to be printed is compared serially with the next type-character to be presented to the printing position so that after one revolution of the drum the entire line, including all subscript and superscript numerals is printed, and in the second during a first revolution of the drum all characters in the normal position are printed, during a second revolution all subscript numerals are printed and during a third all superscript numerals are printed. The general construction of the drum is conventional, the coded marks 51-57 being sensed magnetically and being slightly offset from their corresponding characters.
