Recording-apparatus comprises a marking cylinder 1 bearing a series of identical, discrete, raised portions 13 arranged in echelon in equidistant planes at right angles to the axis of the cylinder. The angular position of the cylinder at which a mark is made is determined, in accordance with a variable, whose instantaneous value determines which line 9 receives a pulse, the number of lines 9 Fig. 1 (not shown) corresponding to the number of portions 13. The mark is made on a record surface moved between the cylinder and at least one hammer which is driven towards the cylinder to apply an impression when the cylinder is in the selected position.
