Abstract

1300331 Printers SPERRY RAND CORP 29 Jan 1970 [10 Feb 1969] 4406/70 Heading G4H [Also in Division B6] A printer comprises a rotatable drum 18 having rows of type 1-4 on its periphery, the rows being in pairs 23, 24, each member of a pair bearing similar character sets and the members of different pairs being different. A card 12 is fed stepwise past the drum 18, each step being equivalent to two rows of type on the drum, and at each step a character is printed if that character is present in the row of type adjacent the respective position on the card. Information to be printed is stored in 12-bit form in a memory 42, and decoded at 44 into a 6-bit code, comprising 5 data bits and a wheel bit defining the character set. The character in position is supplied to comparators 62, 64, 66, 68 from a counter 60 receiving pulses from a pulse generator 80 responsive to rotation of the drum 18, the comparators energizing hammer coils 70, 72, 74, 76 on an equal compare with the contents of 5-bit registers 50, 52, 54, 56. Control logic 46 includes a photo-cell indicating motion of the card 12, printing taking place only when the card is stationary, and a 3-stage binary counter controlling the transfer of data between registers 50, 52 and 54, 56.
