Abstract

1,000,944. Electric selective signalling systems. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd. March 14, 1962 [March 29, 1961], No. 11481/61. Heading G4H. In a printer of the type in which ganged type-wheels 1, Fig. 1, are continuously rotating a photo-electrically sensed disc 11 produces a pulse for each character-position around the type-wheels and two distributers 16 are so connected to thirteen leads (not shown) as to mark a different two leads as each character passes under the printing hammers. In operation as each character passes under the hammers the entire contents of an eighty column core-store 20, Fig. 2, storing a line of data to be printed are read out serially by row and compared by gates 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 with the particular character under the hammers. Each time agreement is found a " one " is inserted in a shiftregister 33, which is stepped synchronously with the read-out of the core-store, whereby when the entire contents of the core-store have been read-out the shift-register holds a " one " in every position where the character under the hammers occurs in the line of data that is to be printed. All of the hammers corresponding to these " ones " are then actuated. In this way the line of data that is to be printed is printed by first printing all the A's in the line, then all the B's and so on, and the entire line is printed in one revolution of the type-wheels.
