Abstract

Coumarone derivatives of formula <FORM:1063158/C2/1> wherein R1 is hydrogen or a methyl or phenyl substituent, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are hydroge atoms or C1- 12 alkyl groups or R2 and R3 or R3 and R4 together form a C3- 4 alkylene group and in which the benzene ring of the benzofuran may optionally be substituted by one or more C1- 12 alkyl groups and/or sulphonic acid groups and salts of the sulphonic acids, many of which derivatives are novel, may be obtained in the case of those compounds which do not contain sulphonic acid substituents by (1) reaction of a benzofuran-2-carboxylic acid chloride or bromide with benzene or an alkylbenzene or by (2) reaction of the sodium salts of salicyclic aldehydes or o-hydroxy phenyl ketones with o -halogeno-acetophenones which may be alkylated in the aromatic ring. The corresponding sulphonic acids may be obtained by sulphonation of the benzoyl benzofurans with sulphuric acid and desired salts obtained by reaction of the sulphonic acids with a base. Compounds of the formula above in which R1 is -CH3, R5 and R3 are hydrogens, R4 is H, -CH3 or -C2H5, R2 is H or -CH3 and the benzofuran ring is substituted or not in the -4-position by a C1- 12 alkyl group, and also compounds of formula above, wherein the benzene ring of the benzofuran is substituted by an -SO3H group with or without also being substituted by C1- 12 alkyl group(s) and their salts are claimed per se. Also claimed are 2-benzoyl-3-methyl-, (2,4-dimethylbenzoyl)-, 2 - (2,4 - dimethylbenzoyl)-3 - methyl-, 2 - benzoyl - 3,5 - dimethyl-, 2-benzoyl - 3 - methyl - 5 - nonyl-, and 2 - benzoyl-3 - phenyl - benzofurans.ALSO:Cosmetic ultraviolet absorption agents comprise an admixture of an inert, physiologically-acceptable carrier suitable for topical application and a compound of the formula: <FORM:1063158/A5-A6/1> wherein R1 is a hydrogen, methyl or phenyl radical, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are hydrogen or a C1-12 alkyl group, or R2 and R3 or R3 and R4 together form a C3-4 alkylene group and wherein the benzene ring of the benzofuran may be substituted by one or more C1-12 alkyl and/or sulphonic acid groups. The agents may also contain one or more other ultraviolet absorbers such as the sodium salts of 2-phenylbenzimidazol-5-sulphonic acid and 3,4-dimethylphenylglyoxylic acid, 4-phenyl-benzophenone, and isooctyl-4-phenylbenzophenone-2\sv-carboxylate.
