Abstract

1,063,030. Lighting fittings. SMITHCRAFT CORPORATION. Aug. 5, 1964 [Nov. 29, 1963], No. 31865/64. Heading F4R. A lighting fitting comprises a housing 10 adapted to be installed in a recess in a ceiling without projecting therefrom and a light diffusing shield 12 adapted to be installed in the housing by upward movement towards the housing without external securing means, the shield being held by supports 30 connected to the housing and comprising a main lighttransmitting body 14, light-transmitting support-engaging members 16 mounted along two opposite edges of the body and adapted to releasably engage the supports 30, and lighttransmitting flanges 18 extending laterally from the main body along the two opposite edges to overlap the edges of the ceiling recess when the shield is in the installed position. The supports 30 are elongated flat plates- 32 having troughshaped hooks 34 along their lower edges to receive similar inverted portions 20 on the members 16, and the supports are connected to the housing by toggle linkages each comprising arms 52, 53 and a tension spring 54 which biases the linkage towards either its extended or retracted position. The supports are guided by wheels 31 running on the inside surface of the housing. The shield 12 is installed by engaging its hooks 20 with the hooks 34 and pushing it upwards, when small projecting members 21 on the inner surfaces of the endpieces 17 of the shield abut the support members 30 to move them in the same direction. When the toggle linkages pass over-centre they draw the shield up into the housing until the flanges 18 engage the ceiling.
