Abstract

A jet of burning natural gas or the like issuing from bore-holes is extinguished by means of a curtain of extinguishing agents formed under pressure around the burning jet so that the drag effect of the jet is utilised to convey the agents to the height of projection. The extinguishing agents are halogenated hydrocarbons alone or mixed with a liquefied propellant gas. They may be projected towards and into the jet by three nozzle tube rings (2) in series vertically and of different design so as to achieve the maximum impact upon the jet.
