The force with which two members, e.g. welding electrodes, are pressed together is measured by inserting between them engaging surfaces (19) (20) adjacent, the resiliently connected (17) ends of legs 14, 15, whose relative movement is indicated on a dial gauge 12 as a measure of the force. To adjust the sensitivity of the apparatus, the gauge 12 is moved along a slot in an inverted channel-section base 10, and locked with set screws 28, 29 in adjusted position. The lower leg 15 is secured by screws 27 between the sides of the channel 10 and the gauge probe 24 senses the position of the upper leg 14. The range of the apparatus can be further adjusted by inserting a split sleeve adapter (33) of appropriate spring constant in the loop portion (18). A screw 34 is adjusted to prevent overloading.
