Abstract

1,061,793. X-ray tubes. FIELD EMISSION CORPORATION. March 23, 1964 [June 24, 1963], No. 12177/64. Heading H1D In a method of producing high-intensity X- ray pulses from a diode X-ray tube which includes a pointed anode and a cathode structure having a plurality of separate field emission portions, pulses are applied to cause field emission, each pulse melting part of the metal of at least one of the cathode portions to provide cathode metal vapour ions to enhance the current flow through the tube, and being of sufficiently great intensity and short duration to ensure that the impacted surface layer of anode material is vaporized, the main body of the anode remaining below its melting point. The pulses are applied between a tungsten or molybdenum anode 14 having a conical end 16, and cathode portions 28, each of which has an array of projecting needles 30, and is supported around the anode by a nickel or stainless stee cylinder 32 mounted on a nickel disc 24 having a beryllium window 22. For a tungsten anode, the electrons incident thereon must provide more than 20 joules cm.-<SP>2</SP> to vaporize the surface layer, the material condensing on the glass envelope 12 to give a gettering action, shortcircuiting of the anode and cathode being prevented by a shield 34. In alternative embodiments, knife-edge rather than needle projections on the cathodes may be employed (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), and the cathodes may be mounted perpendicular to the anode axis (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). The envelope may be a glass sphere, metal pins passing therethrough to support the mounting cylinder 32.
