Abstract
1,061,302. Joint-making packing; valves. ATELIERS DES CHARMILLES S.A. Jan. 11, 1966 [Jan. 27, 1965], No. 1196/66. Headings F2B and F2V. [Also in Division F1] Butterfly valve parts, guide blades of an hydraulic turbine or any other parts 1, 16 may be sealed by a deformable packing having an inner chamber 11 which can be selectively connected by a valve 14 with the pressure fluid in a chamber A or with exhaust 19 in order to control the deformation of the packing and consequent engagement of joint-making section 3 with part 16. The packing is of U cross-section and, when in the inoperative position shown, entirely occupies a housing in the part 1. When the inner chamber 11 is connected with exhaust, Fig. 2 (not shown), the pressure on the chamber A side of the packing forces leg 9 against leg 10 in a toggle action to urge section 3 into engagement. Disengagement may be assisted by supplying fluid from a pressure increase device to the inner chamber 11.
