In a voltage regulating transformer 1 of the type in which the output voltage can be varied by the operation of coarse and fine tapping switches, the fine switch comprises pairs of silicon controlled rectifiers 4, 5 and 6, 7 which are connected in inverse parallel in series with each moving contact 16, 17 of the coarse switch and which are associated with auxiliary windings 2, 3 arranged so that the fine switch is adapted to cover the incremental steps between successive coarse switch contacts. A suitable drive circuit for triggering the silicon controlled rectifiers is described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown).
