Abstract
1,060,724. Guiding missiles by radiation MESSERSCHMITT A.G. Oct. 23, 1963 [Oct. 23, 1962], No. 41737/63. Heading H4D. [Also in Division F3] In a guided missile system the missile radiates a pencil beam of electromagnetic energy in the direction of its travel and the missile is commanded from the launching point (e.g. an aircraft) to hit a ground target. The beam may be modulated or unmodulated light. In the case of a surface-to-surface system the command guidance may be given via a trailing wire as an alternative to radio. If necessary the missile is stabilized in pitch and yaw. As an alternative to direct visual observation a laser beam is associated with a photo-electric scanning receiver. Millimetric radio waves may be utilized and a wider beam with the same axis as the pencil beam may be added.
