Abstract
A weather-resistant sheet comprises a matrix of bitumen reinforced with fibres of mineral material. The bitumen is of a type catalytically oxidized and is in a condition in which a residual portion of the catalytic oxidation is still incomplete and dormant. In a preferred embodiment, streams of molten glass are attenuated into discontinuous fibres by blowers. The stream of air-borne fibres is divided in two by a partition in the form of an inverted V and falls onto a foraminous conveyer which passes under the partition and so collects two superposed layers of fibres. Glass strands are deposited upon the first of these layers as it passes under the partition; some of these are drawn by frictional adherence to the conveyor and so are laid in parallel lines, others are blown out at higher speed and so laid in a random loopy configuration. The fibrous web is then impregnated with a binding agent, e.g. a phenolic binding agent. The web so made is then coated and impregnated with the bitumen, which may have a slate filler. The web is cooled, zones of chopped strands are laid on the mat in the places where the nailing zones and edges of the final shingles will lie. The web so made is then coated with further molten bitumen and a second mat of glass fibres applied to this coating. This is followed by a further layer of bitumen and then by protective and decorative mineral granules. The product is then cut into shingles. The catalyst for the oxidation of the bitumen may be ferric chloride or phosphorus pentoxide.ALSO:A weather-resistant sheet comprises a matrix of bitumen reinforced with fibres of mineral material.
