Abstract

1,060,476. Fluid regulation. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 23, 1964 [June 3, 1963], No. 16939/64. Heading G3H. Gaseous or liquid fluid supplied through a tube 13 to a chamber 12 issues as lamina flow through a nozzle 14 and discharges to an outlet 24, but energization of a Piezo-electric crystal 19 by an A.C. source 20, resulting in mechanical oscillation of a wall 18, causes the flow to become turbulent and to 'lock-on' to the wall 16 so that the discharge is switched to an outlet 22 until the energization of the crystal is terminated. The crystal may be situated more upstream in relation to the nozzle 14, the walls 16, 29 leading to the outlets may have vents as in Specification 974, 997, and the chamber 12 may be elongated, with thin vanes to act as flow straighteners. Instead of a Piezo-electric element 19 turbulence may be created by a magneto-strictive device; a bi-metal element that protrudes into the fluid path in response to temperature change, or by acoustical vibrations from an oscillating membrane.
