Abstract

The direct esterification of terephthalic acid with a glycol, e.g. ethylene glycol, is effected after first homogenizing the reaction mixture which optionally contains a catalyst such as Ca(OAc)2; the product is stated to be a mixed oligomeric ester.ALSO:Polyethylene terephthalate is made from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol by firstly homogenizing them (e.g. with Ca(OAc)2 catalyst), making an oligomeric ester at 240 DEG C. and catalytically converting this (e.g. with Sb2O3) to high polymer at 285 DEG C. with continuous removal of the glycol in high vacuum; the product has an intrinsic viscosity at least 0.7 and m.p. 262-4 DEG C.
