Abstract

1,059,647. Suspended ceilings. R. P. LICKLITER and E. ABBOTT. Aug. 7, 1964 [Aug. 7, 1963], No. 32238/64. Heading E1W. In a grid for supporting ceiling tiles, fusible shims 19 are clamped between the grid members 2 and grid member connectors 12, these shims being fusible at a predetermined temperature to remove frictional restraint against relative movement between the members 2 and connectors 12. Thereby relative movement between the ends of the members 2 is permitted to prevent buckling of the ceiling at an elevated temperature. Clamping of the members 12 is effected by tabs 16 thereon which pass through an end slot 15 in the member 2 spaced from the inner end and upper edge of the slot and through slots in a clamping plate 18 against which the tabs 16 are clinched. The arrangement permits additionally a relative downward movement of the ends of the members 2 upon fusing of the shims so that the flanges 5 can expand beneath flanges 6 of a transverse grid member 4 as shown in Fig. 3. At ends of the grid members 2 adjacent to those ends provided with connectors 12, the connectors 13 are similarly secured with interposed fusible shims, and the connectors 13 are formed to mate with the connectors 12.
