Abstract
105,957. Wilson, W. H. May 2, 1916. Transformers.-A transformer core is made by winding wire upon a former so that the two sections formed are circular, or one circular and the other annular, the wires being laid upon the former in the same relative positions which they occupy in the finished core. The former consists of two castings, 1, 2 with a central bore 7 and side plates 14. Outer castings 4 can be secured by set-screws 5 and bolts 6 around the circumference of the castings 1, 2 but separated therefrom by the annular space 16. The castings 1, 2 are secured together by the plates 14 and rotated on the centres 15 while the core wire, which has been previously coated with shellac, is passed through the bore 7 and distributed evenly round the circumferential part. Plates 8 may be employed to shape the central part of the core, and the clamping-plates 10 with the side pieces 4 are attached to compress the wire. The whole mass is then baked. The plates 14 are then removed and a saw passed through the division 3 to separate the core into two parts. The screw 13 is removed, and the end cheek 12 with the core is pushed off the casting by means of a rod screwed through the thread 17. The shape of the former may be modified so that both cross sections of the core are circular. In a modification, the former gives the shape shown in Fig. 6 and two such shapes are used as a complete core. In this case the outer member of the core may form a complete annulus.
