[Classes 37 and 38 (i)] High-value wire-wound resistors have the ends of the wire wound and clamped in annular gaps at the ends of cylindrical carriers, the gaps widening radially from the axis of the carrier and being bounded by at least one spherical metallic surface. Windings bare wound on a porcelain carrier a that may have curved ends, or as shown, may be provided with spherical segmental caps c, between which and metal end discs e the ends of the wires are clamped. The discs e are secured by screws d and bear on the caps c at their centre so that an annular space f is formed into which the end turns are wound and clamped. A varnish layer g is burnt on the winding layer and fills the spaces f. In a modification, the wires are wound and clamped between spring discs and end plates, either of which can have a curved surface, the end members in these arrangements being provided with studs that are cemented to the porcelain carrier a.
