Abstract

In a condenser system in which steam from turbine 1 flows into condenser 2 where the steam is brought into direct contact with cooling water introduced through spray 3, and part of the warm water leaving the condenser is pumped through the tubes of a heat-exchanger 5 where the water is cooled by air flowing over the outside of the tubes, the cooled water being then re-circulated to the condenser 2, the minimum pressure of the water in the circulating system is maintained at least equal to atmospheric pressure by a standpipe which is open to the atmosphere and is provided with a float arm connected to a flow-control valve 10. The standpipe may be located at the highest point 7 in the system, and in this case the float arm 9, which varies the opening of valve 10, prevents an excessive pressure in the circulating system and also prevents the overflow of water from the standpipe. If the standpipe is located at position 8, it may take the form of a mercury column supported by the water in the system. In this case the float arm 9 varies the opening of valve 10 to maintain the minimum level of liquid in the standpipe to ensure that the pressure at the highest point in the system shell be at least equal to atmospheric pressure. In systems where a water turbine 11 is used to recover power from the potential energy of the water, the liquid-level device may operate the variable inlet guide vanes of the turbine.
