Abstract
1,058,994. Radial flow gas turbines. SCHWITZER CORPORATION. Oct. 5, 1964 [Oct. 8, 1963], No.40461/64. Heading F1T. The turbine of an internal combustion engine supercharger unit comprises a volute housing having an inlet flange 24, with separate gas inlet apertures 26, 27 therein, Fig. 2 (not shown). Aperture 26 leads to a convergent passage 31 merging at 32 with a volute passage 33 having an outlet 34, Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown), directing driving gas on to the rotor periphery over an arc of about 180‹. Aperture 27 leads to a passage 41 of substantially uniform cross-section merging at 42 with a convergent passage 43 leading into a second volute passage 36 having an outlet extending over the remaining 180‹ arc of the rotor periphery and terminating at 36a. In a modification, Fig. 9 (not shown) the inlets corresponding to 26, 27 are displaced 180‹ apart. The convergent passages 31, 43 accelerate the gases before they enter the volute passages 33, 36 and thus make nozzle vanes unnecessary.
