Abstract
Alkylidene peroxides and hydroperoxides are prepared by reacting a carbonyl compound and a tertiary alkyl hydroperoxide in the presence of a solid catalyst comprising a cationic exchange resin, an activated natural earth or a salt of a polyvalent mineral acid. Cationic resins with sulphonic or carboxylic functional groups, e.g. styrene-divinylbenzene, and methacrylic acid-divinylbenzene copolymers may be used, and suitable clay minerals are listed, and the salts of the acid may be potassium hydrogen sulphate, ammonium chloride, monosodium ammonium phosphate and ammonium hydrogen sulphate. The carbonyl compounds may be saturated, unsaturated, aliphatic, optionally halogen substituted, aromatic cyclo-aliphatic, oxygen heterocyclic mono-, di- or triketones and aldehydes carrying if desired, hydroxyl or carboxyl substituents and many are listed. Examples describe the preparation of 2,2 - di - (t.-butyl - peroxy) - propane, a ,a 1 - di - (t. - butyl - peroxy) - toluene, 2,2-bis -(cumyl - peroxy) - propane, 2,2,5,5 - tetra -(t. - butyl - peroxy) - hexane, 2,2 - di - (t.-butyl - peroxy) - 4 - hydroxy - 4 - methyl pentane, 1,1,4,4 - tetra - (t. - butyl - peroxy)-cyclohexane, di - t. - butyl - peroxy - (2 - furyl)-methane, 1,1 - dit. - butyl - peroxycyclohexane, and 1-t.-butyl-peroxyethanol-1.ALSO:Ethylene-propylene copolymers are vulcanized by 2,2-bis(cumyl peroxy)propane in a composition comprising carbon black, zinc oxide and sulphur.
