Abstract
Epoxyalkyl esters of cycloaliphatic mono- and poly-carboxylic acids are prepared by reacting the acid with epihalohydrins in the presence of thioethers and/or their sulphonium salts at 30-90 DEG C., followed by dehydrohalogenation of the 3-halogen-2-hydroxyalkyl ester, wherein the major quantity of hydrogen halide is removed by solid NaOH or KOH in the presence of the excess epihalohydrin and catalyst at 40-85 DEG C., and, if desired, the remaining halogen is removed by heating at up to 85 DEG C. in an inert solvent in the presence of a less than equivalent quantity of concentrated alkali metal hydroxide solution. The acid may be a tetra- or hexa-hydrophthalic or terephthalic acid or derivatives thereof, hydrogenated benzene tri- and tetra-carboxylic acid, hexahydrobenzoic acid or abietic acid.
