Abstract

A process for the high-pressure gasification of powdered solid fuel (coal) is as described in the parent Specification, but the volatile liquid comprises 5 to 20% b.w. of the total mixture, the condensing and recycling of the separated condensate being thus rendered unnecessary and optional, the released vapours being passed with the coal under pressure to the gasifier. An apparatus is described, see Figure (not shown), comprising one or more vertical chambers each having one or more horizontal outlet pipes at the bottom. Plungers deliver plugs of fuel/hydrocarbon via the chambers to the pipes where a gate valve, operating in synchronism with the plungers, allows periodic access of the plugs to a section of the pipe heated by a water or steam jacket where vaporization occurs. A rotatable helical blade disintegrates the fuel in the section, extracts it, and delivers it to a bunker communicating with the gasifier. A specific example is described.
