Abstract

1,057,874. Inflated cushions. TECHNOPOL LABORATORIES Ltd. July 10, 1963 [July 10, 1962], No. 26487/62. Heading A4M. [Also in Divisions B5 and B8] Pneumatic cushions are made by successively advancing two superposed layers 1 of flexible, weldable sheet material, e.g. polythene or polyvinyl chloride, together between pressing tools 3, pressing the layers 1 between the tools 3 to form successive pockets 5 enclosed by weld lines 4 alongside a tubular passage 7 extending between the layers 1 in their direction of advance, the weld lines 4 including an unwelded portion 8 which connects the pocket 5 with the tubular passage 7, inflating the pockets 5 by passing air or gas through the unwelded zones 8, and welding to seal the pockets 5. In one embodiment (Fig. 2), separate sheets 1 are advanced intermittently between two pairs of welding tools 3 to produce a row of pockets 5 on each side of an inflation tube 6 disposed between the sheets 1 in the tubular passage 7. When unwelded zones 8 lie adjacent apertures 10 in the inflation tube 6, compressed air is introduced into the pockets 5 through the tube 6 prior to sealing the previously open zone 8 by further welding tools 11. The inflation tube 6 may be omitted, air being admitted directly into the tubular passage 7 and the space between successive pockets being sealed to prevent air leaks. Apparatus may comprise a first machine to perform the welding and preforming of the tubular passages and a separate second machine for inflating the pockets, thereby to facilitate transport of the uninflated intermediate product. The two layers 1 could be joined prior to welding when producing a single row of cushions and may comprise a flattened tube or a single folded over sheet. The array of cushions having flexible joining portions betwen them may be used as shock aborbing wrapping for transported article or in the construction of mattresses. The cushions may be used singly.
