Abstract

1,057,561. Therapeutic radiation, producing. A. PRIORE. May 23, 1963 [June 1, 1962], No. 20545/63. Heading H5R. [Also in Division H1] A therapeutically useful radiation is stated to be produced by mixing, in a cavity 8, Fig. 3, a stream of charged particles (electrons or positive ions) and a radiation of centimetric wavelength (preferably 3-80 cm.) and subjecting the mixed radiation to an electric field oscillating at a frequency corresponding to a metric wavelength (preferably 1-50 m.). The centimetric and metric wavelengths are selected to suit the tissue being treated and the supply circuits (which are described in detail) are pulsed at low frequencies related to the patient's pulse rate. The cavity contains a gas such as argon at 2 torr. and a discharge is maintained in this gas by cathode 17 and anode 22, or by twin cathodes 17, 40, Fig. 6 (not shown). The mixed radiation is introduced through tubes 8 from a D.C. accelerator followed by a cyclotron (for the particles) and a magnetron generator (for the centimetric radiation), Figs. 1, 5 (not shown); and impinges upon a magnetically rotated deflector 19a made up of inclined graphite plates. The oscillating electric field is produced by three symmetrically arranged electrodes 25. Magnetic coils 23 which may carry a modulated current, are disposed about cavity 8 and parts of the particle accelerating system. The generated radiation emerges from the end 9a.
