[Class 81 (ii).] An apparatus for electrotherapeutic treatment and treatment with radio-active substances, which may be used together or separately, comprises a double-walled cylindrical hermetically sealed cap 8, Fig. 1, of German silver containing between its walls a radio-active substance such as radium, meso-thorium, &c. surrounded by a cylindrical ebonite sleeve 14 which in turn is surrounded by the cylindrical metal casing 12. This casing constituting the electrode is mounted friction-tight upon a metal body 1. An ebonite plate 15 insulates the cap 8 from the body 1 which is attached to an ebonite handle 5. A lead 7 making contact with the body 1 may be connected to a source of diathermy current. The cap 8 and sleeve 14 may be removed if solely electrical treatment is required. For ray treatment only the casing 12 and sleeve 14 are removed and the cap 8 is connected to the metal body 1 by means of an adapter. Sleeves of metals having different coefficients of absorption such as copper and nickel may be placed over the cap 8 or over the metal casing 12. According to a modification, Fig. 6, a flexible layer of insulating material 43 is laid upon a larger pliable metal sheet 40 which is provided with a terminal 41. A layer of radio-active substance 44 is spread upon the layer of insulating material and is covered by a further insulating layer 46 and finally with a metal sheet 45 which is soldered at its edges to the sheet 40.
