Abstract
1,057,555. Train pipe operating gear. J. VIELMETTER. Sept. 26, 1963 [Sept. 26, 1962], No. 38049/63. Heading B7T. A train pipe service line 7, Fig. 1, is controlled by a cock 5 which may either be manually operated by moving one of a pair of handles 15, or automatically operated when coupling takes place by movement of a lever 23, Fig. 2 (not shown), operating a Bowden cable 25 connected through a control box 21 with the cock linkage. With the coupling un-made, a handle 15 may be turned to pivot linkage 17 fixed to a shaft 19, Fig. 4, so that a pin 41 moves in a slot 37 in a latched cam element 43 pivoted on the shaft 19. During automatic coupling with the service pipe couplings already made, the cock 5 closed and the control box linkages in the position of Fig. 4, the lever 23 is pivoted by the engaging heads 3 and pushes the cable 25 which moves a stop 51, Fig. 6, against a compression spring 63 and swings a spring-controlled latch 45 to release the cam 43. The cam then pivots about the shaft 19 under the force from a spring 49 and moves to the position of Fig. 7, carrying with it the pin 41 and pivoting linkage 17 to open the cock 5. When coupling has taken place, the stop 51 moves to its extreme inward position and frees the latch 45 which returns to its holding position ready to hold the cam 43 when uncoupling takes place and a handle 15 is operated to rotate the linkage 17 and the cam back to the Fig. 4 position and close the cock. If the cock is to remain closed during coupling then the handles 15 must be locked in the cock closed position by latches 29. The head 3 may be provided with a device by means of which the head may be brought into a shunting position, and a further latch cooperating with the means and the cam 43 is provided in the control box to prevent automatic opening of the cock 5 only when the head is in the shunting position.
