Abstract

A tobacco product has added thereto an amount sufficient to alter the flavour or aroma of the tobacco product of a compound selected from the group of compounds having the formulae <FORM:1057504/A1-A3/1> <FORM:1057504/A1-A3/2> <FORM:1057504/A1-A3/3> wherein R1, R2, R4 and R5 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl groups and R3 is an alkyl group. The alkyl groups may contain 1-6 carbon atoms. The amount of compound added is between 0.00005 and 0.5%, and preferably between 0.0004 and 0.02%, by weight of the product. Suitable compounds are selected from a , b -dimethyl-g -pentyliolenebutenolide, a , b -dimethyl-g -pentylbuterolide, a , b -dimethyl-g -pentyl-g -hydroxybutenolide, 3, 4-dimethyl-D a , b butenolide, 3, 4, 4-trimethyl-D a , b butenolide, 3-isopropyl-D a , b butenolide, g -ethyl-D a , b butenolide, or 2, 3-dimethyl-D a , b butenolide. Quantitative examples are given.
