Abstract

Novel compounds of the formulae <FORM:1057447/C2/1> and the pharmaceutically acceptable addition salts thereof, wherein R1 is H, alkyl of 1-5 carbon atoms, halogen, hydroxy, methoxy, mercapto, amino, -SO3H, or methane-sulphonylamino; R2 is H or methyl; A is alkylene containing 1-10 carbon atoms; and X is H, phenyl, p-chlorophenyl, p-methoxy-phenyl, phenoxy, p-chlorophenoxy, p-methoxy-phenoxy, N-pyrrolidino, N-morpholino, N-(N1-methyl)-piperazino, b -indolyl, 3,4-methylene-dioxyphenyl or cycloalkyl containing 3-7 carbon atoms, and a process for the preparation thereof by reducing an aminoacetyl-2-hydroxy-quinoline derivative of the formula <FORM:1057447/C2/2> (wherein R1 and R2 are as above defined), e.g. with an alkali metal borohydride to form a 1 - [5 - (8 - hydroxyquinolyl)) - 2 - aminoethanol of the formula <FORM:1057447/C2/3> subjecting the latter to catalytic hydrogenation, and converting the product thus obtained to a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt by reaction with a non-toxic organic or inorganic acid. Pharmaceutical compositions containing the above compounds and useful as bronchodilators are administered orally or parenterally.
