Abstract

In a high pressure gas discharge lamp having a spherical bulb and two hollow limbs housing liquidcooled electrode holders, each limb has, at its outer end, a flange sealed by a collar 4 and nut 2 with lead washers 3 and 6 and retaining ring 5; in use, cooling water enters through a connection 15, passes down the support tube to the rear of the anode or cathode, and returns up the support tube; during assembly the connection 15 may be used to exhaust the tube and introduce the gas filling (e.g. Xenon at 8-10 atmospheres) into the tube by first drilling a hole 12 through the end part 7<SP>1</SP> of the electrode holder (the end plate 14 being removed) and the collar 4, then dismantling, inserting and drilling washer 13, and securing the cap 14, then introducing the gas filling through the connection 15 and sealing off the bulb by rotating the tube 7<SP>1</SP> half a turn relative to the collar 4. Lamps described have power consumption of 3 and 10 k.W.
