Abstract
Cellulosic materials, e.g. paper, board and textile materials are treated with an aqueous solution having a pH value of at least 5 and containing an aldehyde, a salt of a bivalent metal from Group II of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table with a monobasic acid which is ionized to the extent of at least 50% when in normal aqueous solution at 18 DEG C. and a metal chelate having a stability constant of which the log 10 does not exceed 11, and are then dried and cured. Textile materials comprising cotton, linen, hemp, jute, ramie, sisal or rayon fibres made by the viscose, cuprammonium or nitrate process or by the saponification of organic esters of cellulose, alone or in admixture with acetone-soluble, cellulose acetate, cellulose triacetate, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or polyacrylonitrile fibres may be crease-proofed by the process. The aldehyde may be formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde or glyoxal and suitable metal salts are calcium chloride, bromide, iodide nitrate and thiocyanate, magnesium nitrate, chloride, bromide, perchlorate and iodide, zinc chloride and nitrate and strontium, barium or cadmium chloride. The metal chelate may be of imino diacetic acid, nitrilo-triacetic acid or ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, suitable metals being calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium, zinc, silver and cadmium. After impregnation with the aqueous solution the material may be dried at 30 DEG - 110 DEG C. and cured at 110 DEG - 180 DEG C.
