Abstract

A mixture of oxygen-containing organic compounds, one of which is preferably formaldehyde, comprising monovalent oxygen-containing functional groups, obtained by oxidizing gaseous hydrocarbons, particularly methane, through the use of the reversed flame burner and a molecular oxygen-containing gas, particularly air, is produced by a process comprising the steps of burning a hydrocarbon in a flame of which the central jet is formed by molecular oxygen-containing gas while a current of the hydrocarbon forms a concentric layer surrounding the central jet, then passing the combustion products into a reaction zone into which a further amount of the gaseous hydrocarbon and a fresh amount of the oxygen-containing gas are introduced. Nitric oxide may be added as catalyst.
