Abstract

The surface of an iron or steel article is sulphurized by surrounding the article with a penetrant consisting of powdered carbon, free or combined sulphur and a hydrogen compound and heating the powder and article to 400-600 DEG C. for a sufficient time. The penetrant may be amorphous carbon powder produced from a heavy oil of high sulphur content or a synthetically produced powder with a sulphur content of 1-3% and a hydrogen compound such as a quinone compound. Sulphurizing may be effected by heating the article surrounded by the penetrant in a crucible having a lid sealed thereto or in the apparatus of Fig.2 (not shown) where rapid cooling of the treated article to below 100 DEG C. before exposure to the atmosphere is required. In this latter apparatus the article and penetrant are raised from the crucible bottom on a gas permeable plate. An inlet pipe for inert gas passes through the lid and terminates below the porous plate. An outlet pipe passes through and terminates at the level of the lid. At the end of the sulphurizing process valves in the pipes are opened to allow the cold inert gas to pass through and cool the mass. The crucible and contents are heated in a fluidized bed of carbon in an electric furnace.
