In a semi-rotary hydraulic actuator comprising an abutment 8 and piston 5, Fig. 1, secured by shear pins 6 to a cylinder 1 closed at its ends by end-plates and a coaxial shaft 4 respectively, the abutment and piston are made as elongated prisms with semi-circular ends with sealing rings 7 thereabout positioned so that the distance between the rings adjacent the supporting surface to which. the abutment or piston is attached is greater than the distance between the rings adjacent the surface over which the abutment or piston slide. This produces a thrust surface 11, Fig.4, for the piston 5 and 11, Fig. 5 (not shown), for the abutment 8, on which the hydraulic pressures within the actuator act at an angle 13 which is acute with respect to the tangential plane at the centre of the supporting surface. The hydraulic pressure 14 normal to these surfaces is resolved into two components 16, 15. The component 16 producing a shear force on the pin 24 together with a tilting moment on the piston about the point 18 in the case of the piston and a shear force on the bolt 23 together with a tilting moment about the point 21 for the abutment. In each case, the tilting moment is opposed by a tilting moment due to the component 15. The dimensions of the piston and abutment and the spacing of the rings 7 is arranged so that the tilting moment from the component 15 at least cancels the tilting moment from the component 16 and thus removes any tendency of the piston or abutment to lift away from its supporting surface so as not to produce tensile stresses in the pins or bolts. The bolt 23 may be a pin inserted in a blind hole in the cylinder 1. The hydraulic pressure 14 also acts on the sealing ring, to deform the ring so that it sealingly engages the recess in which it is fitted and the surface over which it slides. Instead of the shear pins and bolts recesses in the supporting surfaces may engage feathers on the piston and abutment.
