Abstract

Novel 24-nor-5b -cholane steroids of the general formula <FORM:1055927/C2/1> in which R represents a hydrogen atom or the acyl radical of a carboxylic acid, Z is the oxygen atom of a keto group, or a hydroxy group and a hydrogen atom, or two hydrogen atoms and R1 represents any one of the groups <FORM:1055927/C2/2> (where R2 is an alkyl residue) are obtained by treating a compound of the general formula <FORM:1055927/C2/3> (wherein Y represents =O or two hydrogen atoms and R3 is an iodine atom or the mesyloxy group) with an alkali metal cyanide to form the corresponding 21,22-dicyano compound which may be hydrolysed to form the corresponding 21-carboxy-23-oic compound. The 21,22-diacid ester may be obtained by subjecting a 20-carboxy-21-oic acid to the action of a chlorinating agent to form the corresponding 21,21-di-(acid chloride) which is condensed with diazomethane to form the corresponding bisdiazo derivative and the latter reacted with an alcohol R2OH. Hydrolysis of the diacid ester yields the corresponding 21-carboxy-23-oic acid compound. missing page 176
