Abstract

105,582. Lane, C. J., and Honeyman, D. L. March 18, 1916. Directing and adjustably supporting endless belt conveyers,. discharging and feeding devices: articles held by grips; slat or lath carriers.-Articles to be electrolytically treated, particularly if flat, are automatically inverted by passage around a rotary device, between two stages of travel through the vat on a conveyer, so that both faces are exposed. In the arrangement shown, for treating iron articles, an endless band conveyer c, Fig. 1, passes around the rollers d, d<1> at the ends of the vat, a drum a, preferably octagonal in section, and a sleeve e, the bearing of which is eccentrically mounted to allow of adjustment of the tension of the conveyer and its position in relation to the drum. In alternate faces, or in all the faces, of the drum a are fitted iron-clad electro-magnets b, Fig. 2, supplied with current by pairs of brushes, which are mounted on an insulating disk on the drum shaft and engaging a ring and a segment on a stationary disk. The segment is designed so that the articles are held magnetically until sufficiently rotated to fall in an inverted position on to the conveyer. A spring contact arm rests on the edge of the insulating disk, in which are notches allowing the switch to open and temporarily disconnect, an electro-magnet p<1>, Fig. 1, holding an article placed thereon by hand. Articles are thus fed on to the conveyer at proper intervals for reversal by the drum. Studs in the conveyer connect the articles to parallel contact bars g', placed below the convever in such relation to the rollers d, d<1>, drum a and guide e as to promote good contact with the studs. The conveyer is guided at its edges by the sides of the vat or otherwise. On the ascending part of the conveyer, additional pressure at the contact surfaces may be obtained by connecting the ends of the electro-magnets r to the parallel contact bars, then made of iron. An acid-proof casing encloses the electro-magnets. When articles not of iron are treated, the drum a and feeding electro-magnet p' are provided with clips or the like for holding and releasing the articles. The conveyer may be perforated for engagement with teeth of a driving wheel. Wide articles can be supported by two or more parallel conveyers.
