A ventilated shoe comprises an outsole, midsole, and an interior liner of resilient compressible cushioning material, with a plurality of slots extending transversely from at least one edge of the shoe and between the outsole and midsole, and communicating with holes extending downwardly through the midsole, and a plurality of spaced small holes extending downwardly through the liner and registering with several of the holes in the midsole. As described the shoe has an outsole 1 of rubber or leather, a midsole 3, and an insole 4 comprising layers 4b, 4c, and 4d respectively of reconstituted leather, latex foam, and English Kip. The three soles are cemented together, with the edge of the upper cemented between the midsole and insole. The midsole has a plurality of spaced circular holes 3b each of which intercepts more than one of a plurality of narrow, closely spaced, transversely extending slots 3a formed in the undersurface of the midsole. The insole has a plurality of spaced circular holes 4a several of which register with each hole 3b. Compression and expansion of the cushion layer 4c by the foot of the wearer causes flow of air through holes 4a and 3b and slots 3a at the formpart of the shoe. Holes 3b are not located directly below the ball of the foot and preferably are spaced inwardly from the edges of the midsole so as to prevent cement from blocking slots 3a. The upper can be secured above the midsole by a Goodyear welt or stitch down construction.
