Abstract
1,055,325. Making heat exchangers. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. June 23, 1964 [July 16, 1963], No. 25945/64. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F4] In a method of manufacturing a heat exchanger which comprises an elongated cylindrical shell 10, a tube bundle 12 and a plurality of baffle elements 18 arranged within said shell (see Division F4), the baffles are assembled in the shell and the shell is then subjected to an inward radial force on either side of each baffle thereby providing annular inwardly extending projections 28 in the shell wall. In a preferred method the baffles are assembled in the shell together with the tube bundle 12 and spacer rods 22 and the shell rotated about its longitudinal axis on a lathe, a hardened steel roller being used to deform the shell, thereby securing the baffles by forcing the shell into engagement with the peripheral edge portions 18a of each baffle.
