A five-element objective having a front diaphragm has a negative lens between two positive components each of which consists of two separate lenses so arranged that their more highly curved surfaces face each other, and the two positive components have approximately equal refractive power so that the two principal points of the objective are extremely close to the plane of symmetry. Optical data are provided for two examples.
