Abstract

The invention comprises a composition which is a heterogeneous mixture of a linear fibre-forming polyester and a copolyamide having a melt viscosity not substantially greater than that of the polyester. The copolyamides advantageously constitute 1-25% of this composition, and should be soluble in, or softened by, water or water/alcohol mixtures, and have a melting point between 140 DEG and 260 DEG C., and an intrinsic viscosity (in 60/40 phenol/tetrachlorethylene at 25 DEG C.) of 0.6-2.0, with a water absorption at saturation of 7-14%. Suitable copolyamides are those of 6/66, 6/610, 66/610 or 6/66/610 types, or those containing carbocyclic structures. In general, no unit should constitute more than 95%, or less than 10% of the copolyamide. The polyesters preferably have an inherent viscosity of at least 0.4, and a melting-point between 150 DEG and 350 DEG C. The polyester and copolyamide are mixed, melted, and spun into fibres before the mixture becomes homogeneous-preferably within 30 minutes of melting. In examples, compositions are prepared from poly-(1,4 - cyclohexylene - dimethylene - terephthalate) and various 6/66 type copolyamides, from poly - (ethylene-terephthalate) or polyethylene-(terephthalate 97% sulpho-isophthalate 3%) and 66/610, 6/66/610 or caprolactam/m-xylylene diammonium adipate or tetramethylene diammonium oxalate/decamethylene diammonium oxalate copolyamides, from polyethylene-(terephthate 90%, isophthalate 10%) and a caprolactam/1,4 - cyclohexylene dimethylene diammonium isophthalate copolyamide, and from a poly-1,4-cyclohexylene dimethylene-(terephthalate/ succinate) or a polypentamethylene - (4,41 - sulphonyldibenzoate/succinate) and a 1,4-cyclohexylene dimethylene diammonium isophthalate/hexamethylene diammonium adipate copolyamide.
