Abstract
1,054,954. Converting. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. May 14, 1964 [June 7, 1963], No. 20061/64. Heading H2F. The low voltage ignition of a by-pass valve 1, which is connected in parallel with a main converter valve, is improved by inerting a device 32 in the voltage divider as shown to boost the voltage in the lower cathode region of the valve. The device shown in Fig. 1 is a varistor so that when the low igniting voltage is first applied its resistance is high and most of the voltage appears between the cathode and the nearest electrode. If however, the by-pass valve is to be ignited at a high voltage. in order to block the main valve, the resistance of the device is low and the high voltage is evenly distributed across the valve. The device may also be a Zener diode or a source of D.C. to boost the voltage in the divider (Fig. 2, not shown), this having the advantage that the capacitors in the divider are charged before the igniting voltage is applied.
