In a steam generator, particularly for nuclear reactors, condensate is re-evaporated by passing superheated steam through it. In Fig. 2 the main superheated steam pipe 7 passing axially through the tank 6 has branch pipes 10 extending across the generated steam outlet 19 through the steam space and into the preheated condensate, the steam being emitted from the annular member 12. These branch pipes 10 may be grouped into conduit tubes 11 as shown. Shields 13 and 14 direct the feedwater from inlet 15 around the periphery of the tank 6 and through the annular space between them into the vicinity of the member 12. The generated steam is deflected by the frusto-conical extension of shield 14 to pass through outlet 17 over the branch pipes before leaving the tank. The tank may be spherical, or cylindrical with hemispherical caps. The branch pipes may be spirally or similarly arranged and are connected to the main pipe through control means such as valves. The flow of feedwater into the tank is controlled, and a pipe 18 connects the condensate into a servo-cycle, e.g. to cool the condensate after shutting down.
