Abstract

1,207,688. Steam generators. HEAD WRIGHTSON & CO. Ltd. 17 Oct., 1968 [20 Oct., 1967; 20 Dec., 1967], Nos. 47881/67 and 57772/67. Heading F4A. The invention relates to steam generating installations of the kind in which heat, for example waste heat from a steel-making process, is supplied intermittently to a stack containing steam generation surfaces, the steam being passed to the steam drum of the installation. In accordance with the invention means are provided for injecting steam, immediately prior to an input of heat, into the circuit at a position between the steam generation surfaces and the steam drum so as initially to raise the temperature of the water therein and to promote more vigorous circulation in the circuit prior to the application of the main heat input. The plant shown comprises a stack 10 through which hot gases are passed intermittently from a process indicated at 11. The stack is lined with banks of steam generation tubes, three banks being indicated, the tube banks being connected to a steam drum 14 by a downcomer 18, and inlet headers 19 and by outlet headers 12 and risers 13, there being one header 19, one header 12 and one riser 13 for each tube bank. A steam injection device 20 is disposed in each riser 13, each injector being supplied with steam from lines 23a, 23 and 21, control valves 24, 24a, being provided in line 23a and non-return valves 22 in lines 21. Feed water is supplied to drum 14 through line 16. Steam from the drum 14 passes through line 15 to the point of use, a portion of the steam passing through line 32 controlled by valve 33, to a steam accumulator 30, this steam subsequently passing through lines 31, 23, 21 to the steam injectors 20. A further steam accumulator 25 is supplied from the line 15 through lines 26, 27 in parallel with the line 15. A steam injector is shown in Fig. 3, a supply pipe 37 entering a curved section 35 of a riser 13 tangentially. The pipe 37 terminates a nozzle portion 38 which is formed with orifices 42 for steam discharge. The nozzle portion comprises guide vanes 44 which are utilized to locate the nozzle. The pipe 37 is disposed within a pipe portion 36 secured to the section 35. The pipes 37 and 36 are packed with steel wool 41 and 40. Other forms of steam injector devices are described.
