Abstract
1,052,937. Polyvinyl alcohol. MINISTERUL INDUSTRIEI PETROLULUISI CHIMIEI. Oct. 21, 1963 [Oct. 22, 1962], No. 41420/63. Heading C3P. Partially hydrolysed polyvinyl esters of predetermined degree of hydrolysis by alkaline saponification of polyvinyl carboxylic acid esters in liquid media, are prepared by a process which comprises treating the polyvinyl ester in the presence of water with a material providing alkali metal ions after predetermining the ratio between the alkali metal and the water to predetermine the degree of hydrolysis of the polyvinyl ester, and allowing the saponification to continue until it ceases spontaneously. The polyvinyl ester may be polyvinyl acetate, the liquid medium may be methanol and the sodium ions may be provided by sodium methylate. The treatment may be effected at elevated temperature, and the degree of hydrolysis may be determined during treatment by testing samples by colorimetric analysis, e.g. using iodine and boric acid. After saponification has ceased spontaneously the degree of hydrolysis may be fixed for the recovery stage by adding water or aqueous acetic acid.
