Abstract
1,052,569. Removing trace metals from liquids, electrolytically. MONSANTO CO. Nov.22, 1965 [Nov.30, 1964], No. 49445/65. Heading C7B. Small trace amounts of metals are removed from salt solutions by electrolytic deposition, using a relatively large volume of a particulate cathode e.g. lead shot, through which the solution passes for a short period e.g. 10 secs., at a voltage of up to 1À5V. relative to a calomel electrode. The lead shot 21 surrounds a perforated pipe 20 of insulating material which prevents the shot from contacting the anode rod 19. A calomel electrode 25 is mounted at the top. Preferably the lead shot presents a surface of up to 500 sq. cms. per cc. of solution. The process is of special application to electrolytes used for the hydro-dimerisation of acrylonitrite and containing mainly quaternary ammonium salts, where small traces of Cu, Ag, Ni, and Fe deposited on the cathode give rise to side products. The lead shot may be replaced by other suitable metals e.g. Zn or Cd.
