Abstract

1,051,753. Aircraft undercarriages. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Sept. 27, 1963 [Oct. 2, 1962], No. 37241/62. Heading B7G. [Also in Division F2] An aircraft axle and brake assembly comprises a support structure 12 detachably secured to an undercarriage strut 36 by means of bolts 38, a rotatable axle 11 mounted on bearings 13 associated with the support structure, a pair of landing wheels 16 detachably secured one at each end of the axle and a disc brake assembly 18 (Division F2) located within a cavity in the support structure 12. The support structure 12 is formed as a box structure and comprises a pair of annular plate-like support members 15 held in axially aligned and axially spaced relationship to each other by an annular drum-like member 16 secured intermediate the outer peripheries of the support members by a plurality of bolts 17. The brake assembly 18 comprises a plurality of interleaved rotors 19 and stators 20 adapted to be forced into frictional engagement with each other by a plurality of circumferentially spaced cylinders 26 positioned in the centre of the annular cavity formed by the annular support plates 15 each having mounted therein a pair of oppositely acting fluid pressure operated pistons 27, 28. An alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) discloses an alternative construction wherein the hydraulic brake applying means 25 are attached to one or both of the support members 15 and thereby compress the brake assembly' 30 between them. In both embodiments it is possible to remove the axle and brake assembly from the undercarriage strut as a complete unit.
