Abstract
294,814. Dierfeld, B. R. Nov. 9, 1927. Addition to 266,348. Fluid-pressure; cone and disc. - Relates to brakes as described in the parent Specification comprising a pair of non-rotating discs movable oppositely and directly by fluid-pressure into engagement with a pair of rotating discs, the discs being arranged in a casing which carries one pair of the discs. The outer pressure chambers provided in the prior constructions is dispensed with, springs being provided for returning the non-rotating discs after an application of the brakes. The central chamber may be divided into two chambers to permit independent operation of the two discs. An arrangement suitable for railway vehicles is described. Fig. 2 shows a construction for the wheel of a railway vehicle. The casing 5 secured to the wheel 3 encloses a pair of brake discs 7, 8 slidably but non-rotatably mounted by means of ribs 42, 43 on the discs engaging grooves on a cylindrical part 40 rigid with the axle-box. Between the discs is arranged a chamber 36 which may be formed by a pair of annular discs of leather or sheet metal connected at the edges by rings of leather or corrugated metal and connected to a channel 37 in the part 40. The disc 7 has a flange 12 surrounding the disc 8. The discs are held in the central position by springs 38, 39 with the ribs 42, 43 abutting against the ends of the slots. By admitting pressure fluid to the chamber 36, the discs 7, 8 are forced respectively against the face of the casing 5 and that of the wheel and the brake is thus applied. In another construction for the rear wheel of a motor-car the discs 7, 8 are mounted on the axle casing and the pressure fluid chamber is formed by a single diaphragm disposed between the discs and secured at its edges to the edges of one of the discs. Fig. 4 shows a construction for the steering wheel of a motor-car, the discs 7, 8 being mounted upon sleeves 25 secured to a cylindrical extension of the stub axle member 6. Two pressure chambers are in this case provided, one between each disc and a flange 25<1> rigid with the extension. Steel packing-rings 53 ensure fluid tightness. Circular ribs 52 on the discs are normally in contact with the flange 25<1>. Pressure fluid can be admitted to either of the chambers or to both simultaneously by passages 14, 15 to apply either or both of the discs. Fig. 6 shows a construction for a railway vehicle axle and comprising a non-rotatable casing 25 slidably mounted in ventical guides 64 secured to the framing 56, the weight being taken by springs 65 attached to the framing and to the casing. The brake discs 7, 8 are slidably engaged with the casing by ribs and slots 42<1>, 43<1> and are adapted to be forced against discs 54, 55 keyed to the axle 1 by the admission of pressure fluid by a passage 58 to chambers disposed between the discs 7, 8 and a fixed disc or flange 57 extending inwardly from the casing 25.
